On Friday, we looked at two chateaux. The first was rather a surprise. It is a very large chateau on the Canal du Midi, but the rooms were large, so it didn’t seem so overwhelming. “A former fortress used in the 1600’s as a garrison and then was bought by an Italian architect in the 1700’s who gave it that Italian palazzo feel with Italian frescoes, mounded ceiling and monumental fireplaces.” The owner collects armor, swords, and other ancient fighting gear, so there was a lot of it in the public rooms. Very interesting!
The second was a rather remote chateau, purchased by a doctor about 15 years ago. He died of Covid in March and his 82 year old widow is living there alone. That one had lots of rooms, but much smaller than the first we looked at. I think neither chateaux fits us, but we had a good day, topped off with an invitation to dinner at our B&B by our host, who has Belgian friends in town for the weekend. We ate on the terrace under the stars. It was a beautiful evening.
