Strawberry Rock

A few days ago, I walked down the driveway to our mailbox and found a small rock painted as a strawberry.  I picked it up and brought it inside.  The rock was beautifully painted and obviously an intentional gift but I didn’t know from whom.  Last evening, we went to a small dinner party at Rita’s home, in our neighborhood.  She mentioned she has been painting rocks, and I asked if it was her that left the strawberry by our mailbox.  Voila!  Mystery solved!  Thank you, Rita!

Not Well

While doing yard work two weekends ago, I started having sharp pains in my lung, on the left side.  After a couple of days in pain, I went to our primary care physician and he sent me to a radiology lab for x-rays.  Within an hour, he called to say the x-rays indicated I have pneumonia and he prescribed medication.  I felt worse and worse and had more pain, waking up two days later and unable to get myself out of bed.  I called my doctor and he recommended I go to ER.  Papa and I chose to go to the Mayo Hospital ER in Phoenix.  I spent several hours having tests run, x-rays, CT scans, bloodwork, and the diagnosis was that I have bronchiectasis, a chronic lung condition that makes picking up pneumonia easier, and may harbor bacteria such as mycobacterium avium complex.  I will go for further testing after I complete the antibiotics prescribed at Mayo.

I already had an appointment at Mayo this past Tuesday, with a pulmonologist, which I kept.  His diagnosis was similar to the ER doctor, plus he told me to “live your life!” by getting regular aerobic exercise, eating a healthy diet, and wearing a mask in groups of people, on windy days, or when there is dust in the air.  I’m still taking it easy as I have some lingering chest pain, but I’m getting better!  I am grateful to family and friends that have checked on me and brought flowers, a friend that has gone on slow short walks to get me out of the house, and to Papa, who takes care of me at every turn!

Tucson Symphony Pops Concert

Last evening, we went to a Tucson Symphony Super Pops Concert, with Mickey Dolenz performing with the Tucson Symphony plus his own band.  Mickey Dolenz was one of The Monkees, a band put together in the 1960’s, and he sang many of the band’s hits, Last Train to Clarksville, Pleasant Valley Sunday, and I’m A Believer.  We had a nice evening out in downtown Tucson.

Dinner Party

We had a dinner party last evening, inviting eight friends to join us for soup and salad.  I prepared tortilla soup and butternut squash bisque, along with a Moroccan salad.  There were plenty of toppings and more to eat.  We enjoyed good wine and conversation with friends.  It was nice!

Sutherland Wash Rock Art District Hike

I have read several sources about the Sutherland Wash Rock Art District, but none identify the exact location.  I found a post about the Baby Jesus Ridge Hike, that had three sites' GPS coordinates marked, so I marked them on my google map and off we went yesterday, to find them.  We parked about 2 miles away, as close as we could get, and hiked up a large wash, then up a small creek bed.  We came upon boundary markers for an "archaeological site" and knew we had found something.  We were the only people there.  We kept going uphill, through a boulder strewn trail, and came upon a bounty of petroglyphs.  They were incredible!

The site is just north of Catalina State Park on the western slope of the Santa Catalina Mountains, and has over 3,200 prehistoric recorded petroglyphs.  The site is considered a place of special significance to the late preclassic Hokokam, who inhabited the area from 1000-1300 AD.  We did not find the three sites I marked on my google map, so we'll go back!  We had an amazing hike!

Pontatoc Ridge Hike

Papa had two eye surgeries in January, on the 7th and 21st.  Both surgeries went well, but Papa had a bad reaction to one prescription eye medication in his left eye.  He is still recovering, with the vision in his left eye somewhat cloudy, and the right eye doing well.  We were slowed down about ten days, but are back to hiking and our usual schedule.

We hiked the Pontatoc Ridge Trail this morning.  It is an offshoot of the Finger Rock Trail, with the end of the hike on a rock outcropping, overlooking the entire city of Tucson and all the surrounding mountains.  We hiked under clear blue skies and temperature in the 50's to low 60's. We stopped for a snack and watched a hawk circling.  The creek was running and the cacti were thick and lush.
