We’ve driven hundreds of kilometers over the past two days, looking at chateaux. Yesterday morning, we left Saint-Clar and drove south to see Chateau Germier, then north to see Chateau Ciuerac, with more along the way. We arrived in Montreal by 5:30, and were very tired.
Today we drove in the general area of where we’re staying, looking at more chateaux. Mostly, we were looking for fun, but one was on our list to look at. As soon as we pulled up to the gate, we realized we had been there before, about eight years ago. The gates opened and the caretaker came to talk with us. He invited us back at 2:00, to meet the owner. We arrived a bit late, at 2:20, and talked with the owner, whose father happens to be American (her mother is French). She said he lives in the US now, in a small town, reluctant to say the state. I pressed her a bit, and he lives in Kentucky. Voila! We had something in common! She invited us back tomorrow for a tour of the property. Should be fun!
We’re enjoying being in Montreal, a village of about 2000, that we’ve visited a few times before. The WWI monument in the village park is quite moving, as so many young local men were killed. We walked this evening after a light dinner in a boulangerie. I enjoy going in the Collegiale church from the 12th century over and over. It’s ceiling is painted with gold stars on a dark blue background and light coming through the stained glass is magical.
