Fontfroide and Narbonne

After another good breakfast in the garden of Chateau Puicheric, we drove to Fontfroide Abbey.  We visited many years ago, when we arrived just minutes before closing and were not allowed inside.  We were quite intrigued and finally returned today!  Abbey de Fontfroide was founded in 1093.  It affiliated with the Cistercians in 1144, and was granted a large amount of land late in the 1100’s, that secured it’s wealth and status.  Today it is beautifully restored, and surrounded by vineyards.  The whole of Fontfroide is beautiful.
We drove into Narbonne for lunch.  We went to the Halle and picked up lunch.  We ate a picnic by the Canal de la Robine, in the city center.  Narbonne was established by the Romans in 118 BC, and a portion of the Roman Road is visible in front of the Archbishop’s Palace.  We walked through the Palace and to Cathedral Saint Just et Saint Pasteur, on the same site as the original church erected in 313.  The current cathedral was started in 1272, and never finished.
