Papa and I woke up to a few sprinkles and a beautiful rainbow over the countryside. We left our Saint-Clar house by 10 and drove south, through Auch, then west to Marciac, known for it’s annual international jazz festival held in August. We ate lunch on the square and walked around the Elise Notre-Dame de l’Assomption, built in the 14th century. A service was in progress so we looked inside the sanctuary through gold leaf entry gates.
We drove north and as we were in the village of Bassoues, cars lined the road, so we stopped to see what was going on. We parked next to the village castle tower, known for it’s dungeon. The tiny village of 320 was hosting a market down their Main Street. People were selling everything from fruits and vegetables to baby strollers to dishes and clothes. There were pony rides for kids and lots of people eating at the village restaurant. We went in Bassoues’ Eglise Notre Dame, built in 1360, with painted walls and ceiling. Bassoues was a “happening place!”Our final stop of the day was in Levardans, a Plus Beaux village, with castle built in the 1100’s. We visited it’s church, with a beautiful mosaic above the front door, and took a walk around the village.
