River Town, a Plus Beaux Village, and an Abbey

Our Wednesday was a full day.  We had a 10:00 appointment to see a house in Nerac.  The house is on the Baise River by the town’s iconic bridge.  It wasn’t what we are looking for, and with climate change, we are not anxious to buy a house on water of any sort, but the house was charming - built in 1600 and renovated, 5 bedrooms and bathrooms, with several balconies and patios.  We really liked it!
We walked around Nerac, a bustling town of 7000, and full of historic charm.  It is full of picturesque charm.  The Nerac house is intriguing.

Our next stop was in Lauzerte, a Plus Beaux village, one of 156 villages with the designation.  All Plus Beaux villages must have a population of less than 2000, have at least two national heritage sites, and local support of the village council.  Lauzerte is a hill town, with beautiful views over the valleys below, and beautifully maintained homes and squares.  We had lunch on the square next to the Mairie.
To complete our circle for the day’s drive, we stopped at the Abbey in Moissac.  The Abbey was founded in the 7th century, with restoration and a new building done in the 11th century.  The Abbey thrived until the French Revolution in 1793 put an end to monastic life.  The abbey church of St. Pierre is still an active church.  Since 1998, the church and cloisters has had protection as a World Heritage Site.  The cloister is the largest cloister in the world and known for the carved capitals of it’s columns plus 12 carved large pillar reliefs.
Our day was long and full.  We came back to Chateau du Frechou for a picnic in the garden.  Was nice!
