Biarritz

We drove to Biarritz this morning, a 3.5 hour drive from Lectoure.  We arrive at noon, to meet Whitney’s family at the beach.  We ate lunch at a beachside restaurant, then had ice cream while watching surfers.  Papa and I drove to the historic center of Biarritz mid afternoon, with Greta.  We checked into the hotel, then walked to the old port area, and around the boardwalk, to the Plage de la Côte des Basques, to meet up with Whitney, Corey, and Toby for their surf lessons.

“Biarritz become famous in 1854 when Empress Eugénie, the wife of Napoleon III, built a palace on the beach, now the Hotel du Palais.  European royalty were frequent visitors.  Biarritz’s casino opened in 1901 and beaches make the town tourist center for Europeans and North Americans.  The city has become a prime destination for surfers from around the world.”
