Joy!

I saw this article a few weeks ago in the NY Times.  I am a joyful person and I completely identify with the sentiment expressed in the article.

"We hosted the first-ever Well Festival in Brooklyn, which brought together some of the biggest names in health for a day of conversations. A lot of the talks focused on common cornerstones of well-being, like nutrition, mental health and fitness. I was struck by how many of the conversations touched on joy. Specifically, how essential joy is to building a healthy, meaningful life. And how to cultivate a bit more of it every day.

Specifically, how essential joy is to building a healthy, meaningful life. And how to cultivate a bit more of it every day.

Here are three favorite joy-boosting tips.

Want to live a longer, happier life? Tend to your relationships, said Dr. Robert Waldinger, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School who oversees the longest-running study of human happiness. That study has found that strong relationships are one of the biggest factors in people’s well-being as they age.

Investing in connection doesn’t have to be a heavy lift, Dr. Waldinger said, at one point instructing all those in the audience to take out their phones and text someone they hadn’t seen in a while.

“Just say, ‘Hi, I was thinking of you and I wanted to connect,’” he said. Don’t worry if you don’t get a text back, he added. It’s like baseball. You won’t get a hit or a home run every time, and that’s OK.

Kelly McGonigal, a health psychologist at Stanford University, was in a remedial physical education class as a kid. So it’s surprising, she explained, that she has built a career around joyful movement.

Exercise can help us feel more inspired and hopeful, she said, and it “changes our brain chemistry in a way that makes it easier to connect with others.” The challenge is to find ways to move your body that feel joyful, not burdensome.

So give some thought to the kinds of movement that feel good to you. For some, it might be a challenging run that feels lousy in the moment but makes you feel strong and proud of your persistence after the fact, Dr. McGonigal said. For others, it might mean taking the dog for a walk.

“Your body will give you data,” Dr. McGonigal reassured the audience. Think about what you want more of in your life. Do you want to be outdoors more often? Play more? Make new friends?

Suleika Jaouad, the memoirist and author of a new best seller, “The Book of Alchemy,” was diagnosed with leukemia in her 20s. Last summer, she had a recurrence, and the advice a lot of people offered was to live each day like it was her last. But every time she heard that sentence, she felt an “intense sense of panic,” Jaouad said.

“It is exhausting to try to make every family dinner as meaningful as possible — to carpe diem the crap out of every single moment,” she said. “So I am done doing that. Instead, I’ve had to shift to a different mind-set, which is the idea of living every day as if it’s your first — to wake up with a sense of curiosity and wonder and playfulness.”

One way Jaouad, a committed journal keeper, tries to accomplish that is through what she calls “small acts of creative alchemy.” Recently she has been jotting down 10 memorable moments from the past 24 hours, stream of consciousness. She has been surprised by the things that have bubbled up.

“It’s always the small moments,” Jaouad said."

New Hike

I went a hike this morning that was new to me, about 4.5 miles to the north of Lectoure.  It was peaceful and partly through woods with dappled shade, and with big views of Lectoure, across planted fields.  I will take that hike again!

Saint-Pierre Cathédrale in Condom

On Wednesday evening, we left a bit early to drive to Condom for dinner with friends.  The restaurant, L’Apero was just a few steps from Saint-Pierre Cathédrale, so we walked inside.  We were the only ones there, at 7:20 in the evening.  It is a magnificent Cathédrale!  “Built in the 16th century, on the site of an abbey church from the 11th century, it dominates the town of Condom.”

Our dinner at L’Apero was delicious and fun!  We met friends Judy, Richard, and Ghattas and enjoyed sharing tapas.  The chef/owner is joyful and creative.  She moved a couple months ago from her restaurant Les Caprices de Lagraulet.  We were sad it closed, but thrilled that she is now closer to us and continuing to make amazing food!

Bonne fete des Mères

Sunday was France’s Mother’s Day.  I celebrated again!

I went on an early walk down the valley just north of Lectoure and had multiple sightings of hot air balloons.  It was a beautiful morning!

Papa and I went to two vide greniers, one in Caussens (with an accordianist) and the other in the tiny village of Saint-Orens-Pouy-Petite.  We didn’t buy anything, but we had fun looking.  We took a back road home, and drove through beautiful fields of wheat and just planted sunflowers.  We had Mother’s Day lunch at L’Atelier D’Auria - a favorite, and it was delicious!

Papa’s Birthday

We celebrated Papa’s 79th birthday yesterday.  Papa had calls from each of our children and his sister, and emails and texts from friends and family.  He enjoyed every one!  We had a small gathering of friends and friends of friends, visiting from out of the country.  We were an international group, from the UK, Zimbabwe, Finland, Switzerland, Vietnam, France, and the US.  We had a light supper on the terrace.

After supper, we went to a concert in the Cathédrale, with a friend singing in the choir.  Beautiful end to our day!

Thursday in Pouy-Roquelaure

We visited our friends Lesley and Andy at their home in Pouy-Roquelaure on Thursday.  Pouy-Roquelaure is a tiny village, built in the 1500’s.  Lesley and Andy rebuilt their home from the floor to the roof, leaving carved lentils in place and using old beams that had fallen to the floor.  It is beautifully crafted and they have a vast view of the countryside.  Note the date of 1583 carved into the stone above the doorway to the village.

Le Week-end

I went to Lectoure’s Friday Market to buy fresh fruits and vegetables.  Papa went to the gym early, then found me at the market.  We had lunch at Le Bar XIII in Lectoure, and it was delicious.  We sat next to friends, Yves and Solenge, and chatted back and forth over lunch.  We made a reservation for next Friday!

On Friday evening, we invited friends Deirdre, Abby, and Ayse for apéros.  We sat on our terrace in the garden for a couple of hours, then went up to the balcony for sunset.  It was a nice evening with perfect weather.

We had a lazier day on Saturday, went to the grocery, did laundry, read, hiked, and ran into friends in the evening while out for a walk.  A good day!

This morning was clear and there were balloons flying over the Gers River just to the south of us.  Always fun to see!

We had 1:00 lunch reservations in Moirax, so we took the back roads and stopped at a church we had not seen before, down a single lane, at the end of the road.

We ate at Auberge du Prieure, the nearest Michelin starred restaurant to us, and always a treat!  We sat in the courtyard and had an 8 course, 3 hour Sunday lunch.  It was creative and delicious.  Afterwards, we went to a concert at Eglise Notre-Dame de Moirax, of Mozart’s music with an orchestra and choral group of 30.  There were also Gregorian chants preformed by monks from a nearby monastery.  Amazing!

Lunch with Friends

On Wednesday, we had lunch with friends at O Canard Toquet, a restaurant in their village of Urdens.  It is a tiny village with no stores, just the restaurant and a few houses, about 275 inhabitants.  We arrived a few minutes early and I noticed the door was open to Eglise Saint Saturnin.  We stuck our heads in and there was a parishioner tidying up.  She turned the lights on for us, and we were stunned by the beautiful ceiling and the stained glass windows.  We met our friends, had a delicious lunch, then walked to their house for coffee.  We had a nice afternoon!

Every Day is a Good Day!

On Saturday, I prepared for dinner two couples we’ve known since our first year in Lectoure, 2022.  Each lives in a small village several kilometers from Lectoure, and we get together often.  While taking a break around 3, I had a text message from friends from a different village, that were in Lectoure and wanted to stop by.  They came a few minutes later, and stayed until 5:15.  We were thrilled to see them!  She is Canadian and he is French.  They spent their winter in Canada and are just back for the summer.

I rushed to take a shower then went back to the kitchen to cook.  I still had most of the dinner to prepare.  Our guests arrived at 6:30.  Papa entertained them in the salon with glasses of wine, while I spent about 30 minutes finishing the cooking and presentation.  We sat down at the table at 7:00 and we talked until 11.  It was an enjoyable evening and wonderful to catch up with friends, while a light rain fell and occasional bolts of lightning and thunder.  This rainbow was a gift around 9:00.

We woke up this morning to see clouds over most of the Pyrenees, with a bit of mountains peaking through.  Beautiful!

This morning, we went to a vide grenier in Castera-Lectourois.  There had been rain earlier in the morning, so there were not as many vendors as in the past.  Castera-Lectourois is a beautiful small village and we walked to the end of the road, to the 14th century cathedral and turned around.  We bought two large casserole dishes for 1 euro each.  A good morning!

Friday Market

I plan our meals around Friday market in Lectoure!  Farmers from the area arrive early Friday morning to sell fresh vegetables and fruits, breads, patisseries, meats, mushrooms, and all sorts of other things - from plants to clothes to mattresses.  Friday market is the gathering place for the village and the surrounding area.  Everyone goes, so there is lots of stopping to hug and chat.  Photos from Friday market….

Our friend Deirdre came for lunch after the market, with her friend Anne-Maree, visiting from New Zealand.  We ate on our terrace in the garden.  It was a beautiful day!

In the evening, our friend Gerard, and his friend Claire, came for dinner.  We went up to our fourth floor balcony for a glass of wine, then had dinner in our breakfast room.  Our friend, Ayse, cooked our dinner.  It was delicious!  We had a nice evening.  A good day!
