Trip to the Pyrénées

Papa and I left Lectoure by 9 Friday morning and drove to Saint-Savin, a small village in the Pyrénées.  We checked in early at our hotel, and had a picnic lunch in the overlook of the town square.  We drove about an hour south, with waterfalls along the way, to the Pyrénées National Park.  We took the chairlift up the mountain, then hiked to Lac de Gaube.  Absolutely beautiful!  We took the chairlift partway back, then hiked to Pont d’Espagne, a Bridge that used to join France and Spain, but the boundary was moved when formally defined in 1659 by the Treaty of the Pyrénées.  Pont d’Espagne spans the union of two rivers with a huge waterfall coming from one.  It is a beautiful site!

We stopped in Cauterets, a village dating back to prehistoric times because of its thermal springs.  Today, skiing is also popular.  The village was developed in the 1800’s.  We visited a boulangerie known for their blueberry tarts, and walked through some of the village.
