We went to a choral concert on Saturday evening at Eglise Saint-Esprit in Lectoure, with a choir of 30 performing Brahms and Tango music from a Buenos Aires composer. The church was full and the choir received standing ovations. It was excellent.
This morning, we went to a vide grenier in Saint-Clar. We bought a marble lamp and a painting of sunflowers in countryside. We had fun looking at all the things for sale. We stopped in Saint Creac to visit Eglise Saint-Loup, dating from the 6th century and remodeled in the 12th century, much of it was destroyed in the Hundred Years War, but the painted choir remains. Eglise Saint-Loup was locked, but we walked around the cemetery and the village.
We drove up to Auvillar for their Sunday market. Auvillar is a Plus Beaux Village on a bluff above the Garonne River. Auvillar is one of the spiffiest villages we’ve ever visited. The arcaded center of the village is filled by a round market halle. We walked all about and had lunch at Le Petit Palais, a restaurant we’ve eaten in before. Every dish is served as a work of art.
We went to a second vide grenier in Lamagistere, then drove south through Dunes, a 13th century bastide village, then to the tiny village of Gimbrede, and Rouillac Castle and it’s Eglise Saint-Jacques. It was an interesting drive with lots of historic places for us to research.
