Papa and I made a reservation to tour Georgia O’Keeffe’s Abiquiu Home this morning at 10. There were five people on the tour plus a tour guide. We couldn’t have enjoyed it more.
O’Keeffe purchased the home in 1945 from the Catholic Church. It was in ruins, with the oldest rooms of the house built in 1744 and expanded in the 19th century into a pueblo style hacienda, with rows of rooms organized around a courtyard. It sits on a bluff over Rio Chama in the village of Abiquiu. O’Keefe oversaw the renovation from 1945 until she made it her permanent home in 1949. The completed compound is a pueblo style hacienda with mid century modern interior decor, as it was when O’Keeffe lived there. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998. She lived in the Abiquiu house until 1984. She died in Santa Fe in 1986 at the age of 98.
