We visited Convento Arraiolos a few years ago. Arraiolos is crowned by a castle on a hill. The convent is in a valley below. “The date of its foundation goes back to the 16th century. The Order of Santo Elói decided to build and dedicate it to Nossa Senhora da Assunção. Bought by the state of Portugal in 1980, the convent was completely restored. In 1995 it was adapted into a historic hotel.” The chapel is exquisite! The walls are covered with pictorial azulejos and the pulpit is covered in gold leaf. The whole convent is beautiful, with vaulted hallways and wood trimmed ceilings, and glassed in cloister. We are enjoying staying a couple of nights in Convento Arraiolos. I swam in the indoor pool this afternoon, we had dinner tonight at the Convento, and the views all around are beautiful.
