The area, both north and south of Vila Viçosa, is known for its marble. Portugal is among the top 10 producers of marble in the world. We walked up the street to visit the Marble Museum. We watched a short film and enjoyed the museum exhibits, showing the cycle followed by marble, from geology through history, extraction, and transformation for use. It was a fascinating visit, all the more so because a man was killed in a marble quarry nearby, earlier in the week. It is dangerous work.
