We walked along the Sado River, down the hill from Pousada Castello D. Afonso II. The tide was on its way out as we walked in the morning, and on its way back in, late in the afternoon. The difference in water level in the river was about 10+’, a huge difference that left most boats in the muck during low tide. We stopped in the beautiful Igreja de Santiago, with its walls covered in blue azulejos. We had lunch at QB’s on the waterfront.
We drove up the Sado River to Porto Palifita da Carrasqueira, where local fishing boats dock. It was low tide, so all the boats were high and dry - no fishing this morning!
We drove through the village of Comporta, just 15 miles from Alcacer do Sal. Comporta is an “under-the-radar celebrity haunt, where you might bump into the international jet set - Madonna, Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni, Christian Louboutin, or Andrea Casiraghi.” We didn’t bump into anyone famous, but we were awestruck at the beautiful beach that goes on for miles in each direction.
