Lascaux and La Roque Saint-Christophe

We purchased tickets for a tour of Lascaux, at 11:00 today.  We arrived by 10:20, and our tour began at 10:40.  We’re so happy to have arrived early!  Visiting Lascaux is a bucket list check off for sure.  Lascaux is the setting of a complex of caves near the village of Montignac.  The Grotte de Lascaux has over 600 paintings, covering its interior walls and ceilings, primarily of large animals of the Paleolithic time.  The age of the paintings is estimated at around 20,000 years.  The Grotte de Lascaux was found in 1940 by four French teenage boys.  It was inducted into the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1979.  The Grotte was closed to the public several years ago, and a reproduction of the cave was constructed inside a large museum facility on the site.
We enjoyed plat de jour lunches in Montignac after our cave tour, sitting outside at a sidewalk cafe.  Our next stop was at La Roque Saint-Christophe, an ancient troglodyte city and fort built on cliffs overlooking the Vezere River, and occupied over 55,000 years.  We walked up and down the multi layered dwellings of the cliff, with carvings in the rock.
After a late afternoon siesta, we drove up to the hilltop village of Domme for sunset.  It was a perfect end to our day!
