Gardens of Marrakech

After an enormous and delicious breakfast at our Riad, we walked to Jardin Majorelle. The garden dates from the 1920’s when French artist, Jacques Majorelle created it. The garden was purchased by Yves St. Laurent in the 1980’s, and he restored it over the next years. It is a beautiful, peaceful garden with collections of cacti, tropical plants, and succulents.

We walked across the Medina, and through souks to Le Jardin Secret, created in the late 1500’s on the grounds of a sultan’s palace. The garden fell into disrepair in the early 1900’s, and was renovated between 2012 and 2016. Today, the garden is divided into an exotic garden and an Islamic garden. The exotic garden is filled with plants from all over the world, and the Islamic garden is laid out in four equal parts with a large gazebo in the center with a beautifully painted ceiling, and walkways surrounding the garden, plus a terrace above for a view of the garden and beyond. It is a peaceful oasis inside the Medina of Marrakech.
