Canyon de Chelly

We left home at 8:30 this morning, and drove six hours north.  The landscape along way was beautiful, with palo verdes in full yellow bloom dotting the hills and mountains surrounding saguaros from Tucson to Globe.  We drove through Salt River Canyon with rapids on the river from recent rainfall.  The big pine area near Show Low had a green grassy floor, and then on to the big sky country of the Navajo Reservation with miles of red rock cliffs and green grassland punctuated with wildflowers.  The drive was extraordinary!  We arrived in Chinle at 3:30 and checked into the Thunderbird Hotel.

Our friends, Rachel and Bill, and their daughter Rebecca, arrived within an hour and we drove along the south rim of Canyon de Chelly to Spider Rock.  We enjoyed having the overlook to ourselves and watching the shadows in the canyon as the sun was setting.  A special place!
