On Saturday morning, Papa, Jennie, and I walked to the Sénégalaise Cemetery, arriving by 9:50, for a 10:00 service honoring the Sénégalaise soldiers that fought for the French in WWI. Military men came into the cemetery bearing flags, but by 10:40, the ceremony had not yet begun, so we left. Just as we crossed the street, a big bus pulled up to the cemetery, full of relatives of the Sénégalais. We were sorry to miss the ceremony, but humbled by the sacrifice of the 90+ soldiers that lost their lives and are buried in Lectoure.
We set off from Lectoure by 11, with our first stop at Cathedral Saint-Pierre in Condom. The Three Musketeers sculpture stands outside the cathedral. Built in the 1500’s in French Gothic style, the inside of the cathedral is magnificent!
We stopped in Larressingle for a walkabout.
A quick stop at Beaumont Chateau.
We had a delicious lunch at Les Caprices de Lagraulet, sitting on the terrace on a beautiful afternoon. We explored Eglise Notre Dame Vopillon’s frescoed interior, dating to the 11th-13th centuries.
We saw this eglise ruin along the way, and stopped to go inside.
We stopped at a double écluse (lock) on a small river, along the way.
Our last stop of the day was in Blaziert. We visited the Eglise de Blaziert with it’s beautiful frescoes, and we walked up and down the Main Street, running into our friend, Emmanuel. We had a good day!
