Marsala and Segesta

Yesterday morning, we drove from Trapani toward Marsala, exploring the salt pans along the way, then walking about the old center of Marsala for a couple of hours.  Marsala was beautiful and much more than we expected, with Baroque churches and palazzos.  We drove from Marsala toward Salemi, along a road I had read about, through Marsala vineyards.  It was a stunning drive, with hillsides of vineyards and other crops, on both sides of the road as far as we could see.  We stopped in Salemi and walked about the castle and duomo, both badly damaged by an earthquake in 1968.  Our last stop of the day was at Segesta.  We had visited there before when on a cruise, but didn't have enough time to see everything.  This time we enjoyed a leisurely visit of the Ancient Greek temple, built in the 400's BC, and the Greek theater, both with magnificent views to the sea and the patchwork of agricultural countryside.  Another wonderful day!
