Backwaters of Alleppey

Vijesh and a driver picked us up from the Cochin Port this morning, and we rode about 1.5 hours to the houseboat we reserved for the day, to float in the backwaters of Alleppey.  The backwaters are a chain of brackish lakes and lagoons lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast.  The waters are connected by canals fed by 38 rivers, with over 900 km of waterways, framed by dikes, and with floating water hyacinths.  The dikes are covered with coconut palms, small houses, and a narrow pathway.  Tourism is a big industry for the area, as is rice farming, and fishing.

We relaxed and took in the beautiful scenery.  We were served a local lunch, prepared on the boat, and delicious!  Plying the backwaters of Alleppey was one of our favorite activities of the cruise so far!
