Chittorgarh Fort and Udaipur at Night

We visited Chittorgarh Fort this morning, one of the largest forts in India.  Founded in the 5th century and expanded over the following centuries until the 12th century.  It was conquered by the Mughals in a siege in 1567.  The fort was refurbished by the British Raj in 1905.  Today, there is a village of about 3000 people that live inside the walls of the fort.  The wall is over 8 miles long, enclosing 700 acres.  There are 65 historic structures, including 4 palaces, 19 temples (mostly Hindu and Jain), and 20 bodies of water.  Chittorgarh Fort is the oldest fort we have visited in India.

In the evening, we walked from our hotel, through market streets, to the lake, and went to a folk dance performance at Bagore Ki Haveli Museum.  The costumes were colorful, the music fast paced, and the audience had fun.  After the dance, we went back to the lake to see the lights, then past the Maharajah’s palace, next to our hotel.  We enjoyed our evening.
