Painted Rock Petroglyph Site and Organ Pipe Cactuses

Papa and I took a long drive today, over 400 miles.  It was a beautiful day, sunny skies, warm temperatures, and the desert is lush from the rain of the past month.  Our first stop was Painted Rock Petroglyph Site, northwest of Gila Bend.  The concentration of petroglyphs was the most we’ve ever seen.    They are located on the trail that explorers and settlers used, from Sinaloa, Mexico, to San Francisco, hundreds of years ago.  There are indications that some of the petroglyphs date back 1400 years.

We drove south to Ajo, where we had lunch in a local Mexican restaurant, and then did a circle drive through the mountains on the southwest of Ajo, through saguaros, ocotillo, and organ pipe cactus.
