We packed the car and left home by 7:30 this morning, on our way to Breckenridge, Colorado, for a few days with our family. We drove on I-10 to Deming, NM, then across to Hatch, where we crossed over the Rio Grande, then drove along side it to Albuquerque. The Rio Grande Valley is a green ribbon, widening in places, but almost always with a backdrop of mountains on either side. Just north of Albuquerque, the landscape widens and the road climbs higher into grassland, still with mountains in the not too far distance. It was a beautiful drive through New Mexico, to Santa Fe.
We arrived in Santa Fe by 5:30, so after checking into our hotel, we set off for dinner. Santa Fe was a ghost town! We ate at a Mexican diner then walked around the square, past Palace of the Governors (not a single Native American vendor in sight!), Cathedral of St. Francis, and into a couple of shops. I loved the store, “Sign of the Pampered Maiden.” The sky was studded with clouds lit by the setting sun. Nice!
