This morning is our last to stay on the hilltop of Orvieto. We are moving to a larger place just south of Orvieto for the next week. We have enjoyed these past four days in Orvieto. It is an ancient city, surrounded by Etruscan ruins that are visible as you walk about. The tufa rock that Orvieto sits on is hollowed out with caves and tunnels from the Etruscan times and before. The newer city, from the 1200’s forward sits atop old walls and stones. The newer city is quite regal, with ornate doors, window frames and dentil moldings. About 6000 people live on the Orvieto hilltop and they are a real community, with small businesses, schools, restaurants, city recycling, and their religious life.
