We spent most of yesterday traveling. We enjoyed much of the morning at La Badia in Orvieto, and then we took the train to Rome Fiumicino Airport. We flew to London Heathrow and took an Uber to our hotel, Great Fosters, about 8 miles away, near Windsor.
Great Fosters history is traced to 500 AD when the site was enclosed by a Saxon moat and still surrounds Great Fosters, enclosing the beautiful gardens on three sides. There are records with evidence that the de Imworth family lived on the property in 1224. The property changed hands various times, with evidence it was used as a royal residence by Henry VIII as a hunting lodge. The original royal crest of Queen Elizabeth I with the date 1598, is above the main porch, indicating she used the house. The house was added on to and refurbished numerous times. Sir Harold Sutcliffe bought Great Fosters in 1930 and turned it into a country hotel in 1931. Queen Mary visited that year and the Ascot Ball was held in 1931, with the Prince of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of York attending. The Sutcliffe family continues to own Great Fosters. It’s rose garden is as beautiful as any we’ve ever seen.
Great Fosters is a beautiful and historic place to stay a night as our send off back to the US, after an incredible three weeks in the UK and Italy. We’ve had memorable experiences every day!
