Palacio Real de Madrid

We started our day with a walk to the Real Basilica de San Francisco el Grande, built in the 17th century, and with the fourth largest dome in Europe, it’s walls are covered with paintings, including by Goya, beautiful stained glass, and a lot of gold.  It was breathtaking!

We walked past the Palacio Real de Madrid, through several surrounding parks, and enjoyed seeing statuary, and Egyptian tomb gifted to Madrid in the late 1960’s.  We sat on the steps of the Cathedral Santa Maria la Real de Almudena and listened to a wonderful duet concert by a violinist and a harpist, until our time slot for visiting the Palacio Real.  Wow!  We spent over an hour walking through jaw dropping, beautiful rooms.  “The Royal Palace of Madrid is the largest in Western Europe and one of the largest in the world. With over 135,000 square metres and 3,418 rooms, it has witnessed centuries of Spanish history. It is one of the few official seat of a Head of State that is open to the public. Almost 2 million visitors come every year to discover its rooms, works of art and treasures that are unique in the world.”
We enjoyed the armory rooms at the end of the long covered portico.  We thought it was all amazing!
