We were invited to an end of year celebration for Excel, a Boys and Girls Club program that recognizes high school club members with a 3.0 GPA and above. Each student receives a gift card of $25 - for 3.0-3.49 GPA per quarter, or $50 - for 3.5 GPA and above. The same amount of cash is deposited each quarter into an account for each qualifying student. The deposited total for four years is given to each graduating senior. The hope is that the students will use the money to pay for college fees and books.
In its second year, Excel had 100 qualifying students this year, with 76 qualifying at least three quarters. We celebrated with most of them this afternoon at the Holmes Tuttle Clubhouse, as they were feted by our good friend, David, with Metropolitan Education Commission, and a student from UA working on the Osiris Rex project. They received certificates and lots of cheering. We ate dinner with them and had cake. We had a terrific time celebrating!
