Syracusa

We left B&B Quartarella yesterday morning, after saying a reluctant goodbye to Francesco.  We really enjoyed our time there.  We drove about an hour to Syracusa, a 2700 year old city, where we saw the Greek theater and the Roman amphitheater, along with a natural spring cascading out of a small cave on top of the plateau, fields of archeological digs, and large caves including one called Dionysus' Ear.
We walked from the archeological park to the island of Ortygia, considered the historic center of Syracusa.  We were most impressed by the ruins of the Temple of Apollo and the Duomo, which was built around the Temple of Minerva (5th century BC).  All of Ortygia was of ornate construction and quite beautiful, with a castle on the tip of the island.  Beautiful!
